Tips of what to have ready ahead of delivering your podcast episodes

I use Soundcloud to host my podcast. Your host site is the place you upload my episodes, and where I get my RSS feed which is distributing the episodes to podcast platforms like Spotify, Apple, etc. So, for this piece, screenshots are from my Soundcloud page 👍.

Pre-delivery Podcast Checklist

This is what I prepare and check off ahead of each episode going live.

  1. Audio file safe as MP3
  2. Artwork for both the podcast profile artwork and each episodes artwork:

The podcast cover art dimensions are 3000 x 3000 pixels, which is a 1:1 aspect ratio. In general, you should be using JPG or PNG files and if you’re creating podcast cover art, it should have a minimum of 1400 x 1400 pixels

Design resources:

3. Write up your ‘Episode Show Notes’

4. Ensure your ‘Podcast Profile Copy’ is up to date. To note, it is worth including website links as on Spotify, if you use the phone app, that link will work (it does not on a computer app)

5. Tags (I normally use: #podcast #womeninmusic #music #musicpodcast #education ) and then some bespoke ones in relation to the topics for example #tvproduction. You can research online via UBER WORDS

6. Decide on genre (mine is under ‘Music’)

7. I first upload the audio file and save as ‘Private’ so that I can send a private link to my guest/s to listen to and approve. Once approved, I then I schedule my link ahead of time to go live on the date and time agreed

9. On certain hosting platforms, like Acast for example, you can annotate when you want the advert to be — so pre-plan this in your podcast recording aka “and now for a break for a word from our sponsor…”

Once your podcast is live, you will want to share a listening link. There are various listening link options. I use Plink as this offers links to multiple podcats platforms depending on my listener's preference.

  • N.B. Plink is dependent on third-party data ‘Apple Podcast API primarily’ to update their links.

How Your Podcast Looks Once Live

Following the above, here I what your listeners see.

For this article, I am using Spotify to showcase this, a screenshot on a computer, and on your phone below.
